Monday picnic? Mini cakes for brunch? Wedding trends for 2021
Weddings and civil partnership ceremonies are currently allowed across the UK, but the rules vary in the different nations.
If you’re planning a small COVID-safe wedding, the current rules in England allow ceremonies and receptions for up to 15 people in tier one and tier two areas. You can still have a ceremony in tier three but not a reception.
However, the situation is always changing and as a marquee hire company we are keeping our optimistic hat on.
BBC News quotes Prime Minister Boris Johnson saying it’s his “hope and belief” that mass testing and the vaccine rollout mean people will be able to get married “in the normal way” by next summer.
After the most unexpected of years, it might seem mad to be making any kind of predictions for the 12 months to come but two things are for certain:
One, people are still falling in love and deciding to tie the knot! Nothing puts a stop to that.
Two, weddings will look a little bit different from now on – but not in a bad way.
Here are some inspiring wedding trends that we think will be big in 2021…
Some couples are concerned that safety measures might disturb their wedding theme and add an undesirable clinical air. Luckily, there’s a way you can discreetly incorporate strict hygiene into the look and feel of your day – in the form of a ‘welcome box’.
When guests arrive, gift them a beautiful package containing hand sanitiser, your wedding programme featuring notes about any special hygiene measures, and a face mask in wedding colours. We can put you in touch with suppliers who’ll help you create something beautiful.
Once larger weddings are permitted, bookings for weekends are going to fill up fast, so you might be thinking about celebrating your nuptials on a weekday so that you can get married sooner rather than later. Our friendly team is available every day if you would like marquee hire for a weekday wedding. We can work within short lead times.
This year has reminded us about living in the moment, not just living for the weekend. Your guests will be delighted to take a day off work or school to celebrate with you and you’ll usually find that costs are generally more affordable Monday-Friday.
Germs are less likely to spread at outdoor celebrations and couples might be able to invite more people, which will make al fresco weddings a popular choice for 2021.
Fortunately, here in South East England we are blessed with acres of beautiful fields, magical woodlands, and stunning coastline around which to design your wedding. Imagine all your friends and family picnicking in a rural idyll, toasting your future beneath a majestic oak tree, or laughing with your nearest and dearest around a beach campfire.
Of course, you’ll need some shelter and essential facilities such a loos! Don’t be put off hiring a marquee for an unusual outdoor setting because our experts have been erecting marquees in awkward spaces since the 1990s, so we’ve got some tricks in our backpack!
“I’m getting married in the morning,” the song from My Fair Lady goes! This might be an old song, but we predict a new trend for weddings happening earlier in the day. Curfews could be in place and if you’re getting hitched outside, you’ll want to soak up as much daylight as possible.
There are some wonderful ways to make the most of an early start. Instead of the traditional ‘wedding breakfast’, think about having a socially distanced wedding brunch. Our selection of marquee styles includes open-sided options like stretch tents (in case the dry weather is still hitting snooze) and we can help you with safely spaced table settings.
COVID might have put a stop to buffets and canapes but this has made room for some more novel and very tasty ideas. In 2021, we expect to see more individual canape plates as starters and mini cakes rather than the grand iced centrepieces that were once commonplace.
Mini cakes can double up as favours. Why not personalise them with yours or the guests’ initials? Talk to us about caterers in our trusted supplier network.
Crowded dancefloors and live bands might be off the wedding line-up at the moment, but that doesn’t mean you have to celebrate in silence! Compile a playlist of songs for each other on Spotify, perhaps a few from each year you’ve been together (as well as a few retro numbers for good measure).
Alternatively, lots of people are opting for dinner jazz or classical to suit the sit-down style.
A small acoustic act might be possible, creating a bistro feeling. Maybe one of your guests is an accordion virtuoso or knows a bit of flamenco guitar? They could be right on trend and get their moment in the spotlight (only if you don’t mind sharing it with them).
Throw the rulebook out
Rules and regulations around COVID have become a standard part of life now and will shape the planning of all events for some time yet. However, when it comes to wedding trends it’s time to throw the traditional rule book out of the window and have fun with new ways of celebrating.
Keep abreast of the changing rules in your local area and maintain open lines of communication with your wedding suppliers.
When you work with Time Marquees, we’ll always do our very best to be flexible and help you navigate any changes to your plans.
